:thumb308096175::thumb328824985: The WitchesThe witches speak a language
clearer than my mother's, the edge
of a blade, crack of broken glass,
silky slide of sin, come in, come in, in
my ear, a soft patting drum, the
spell bound lullaby
they croak and coo, all manner of
tone and it is sweet as the summer
tongue growing fat on hand cart ice cream
pops, brisk as the Boston cabbies,
neither here nor there, they are
ever here evermore. They are
inside me, flapper dancing
the pelvis bones, acutely out of
style and carefree, they have me,
the potion's daughter, their invitation
sheer formality. I am in, I am
in, I am deep
at the bottom of the cauldron.
Do you dare consume me? The woman
who gives cancer out freely and lives
to die yet never dies, the sick
anomaly. Can you hear them?
Press your ear
to the flat of my skin. I am
the cast-off shell of the sea,
hollow and rustling – that, there,
that is them – their greedy hands
are chanting, come in, come in,

incandescent pixie dust and
                                soot-stained stars,
sluggishly making its way through
a childish heart — wishing for one last chance
to spread her wings and soar to

Witches MarketMidnight fell like an old black bird;
I meant to wait for you.
There were tables rich with
amethyst and pearls,
and fragrance by the fistful,
mint and petrichor.
I meant to wait for you.
You were gliding through the haze
with your knotted bag half full-
shadows flicked their tongues
above your knees;
you meant to look for me.
Moments ran like mice;
a silver pot, a cup of tea.
She stank of vinegar and thyme-
the hand was hers, the heart was mine.
Her iron eyes reflected flame;
she took my lungs, she took my name,
though you had meant to look for me,
and I had to meant to wait for you
amid the black salt and the brew.
Ash for the handle,
Birch for the brush,
Willow for the cord that binds the twigs.
WITCHES' NIGHTThe Night raises her skirt and unlaces
her garter, the Stars fall out in erotic
intervals of silver-steamy wishes, they
purify the cosmic cauldron where the Night
brews her magic-and I feel myself flying
toward her, through her blue velvet space
I fly even higher on my besom sweeping
the Night clean with my witch's wisdom,
and my eyes flooding full with the blood
from the Moon-reads incantations between
these ancient pages of Stars, bright as
a black cat's stare, emerald flames rise
and cerulean billows from delicious Skies,
I hear the heartbeat of these nocturnal
hours, echoing my name and deafening the
Silence-where cackling ravens foretell
an omen-they cast down to me a shiny black
feather that slips into the slender sheath
between my breasts, I see with the high
sonar of the bats happily tangled in my
streaming tresses, smoke sifting through
the cracks in the Night's skin, and the
cards she splays before me-I catch one
with my obsidian nails, inhaling the Fortune
that slithers with
