I remember the night
we yelled the walls down
just to see
who was listening.
You bit your tongue
so hard
I could feel the summer
rise beneath my feet
and I knew how it felt
to tremble
like bleached shells
or rain caught in a cup

You let me
roll your stockings down
and we jumped the fence
to steal strawberries
which I watched you eat
like a dying man's
last wish
and I knew I wanted
to be the taste
that made your cheeks flame
pink.

We watched the leaves fall,
lost messages,
flattening the trees
like too many moments
we could not remember
or celebrate,
and it made me
count you on my fingers
and wonder why
I ever thought
I could hold you in my hand...

Truly stunning piece!

Perhaps I have read poetry for too many years but rarely does it affect me like this anymore.

Each verse spoke on many, deep levels and this is a rare treat, my friend.

You play all our emotions like cellos. Very cleverly, you had something in this for everyone. The nostalgia...

"like too many moments
we could not remember
or celebrate,"

took me by complete surprise. This is such a beautiful capturing of (mostly) innocent love.

This poem seems to have a hint of an elegy about it, Brendan, a celebration of what we know will never be again.

Accomplished with you usual grace and skill.

Thanks. And that was the intention...that fleeting first throw of passion. I am just glad it lasted and mellowed into a nice fire.

yeah, the guys I met just can't write sweet things. I can't understand why... is a mystery why some people just don't care about literature.
